This is the older photo and the cropped and restored version of Dessies photo. Perhaps someone will recognize the other people in it. I would also love to know what year this was taken. I know it was taken in Monasterboice Road.
Dor told me that the lady on Dessie's left is Dolly, her father's sister. The clock on the mantlepiece has a special significance.
Dessie was a real character with a great wit and loved to joke around. When we came to see him he would take out a few five pound notes, put them on the ironing board and start to iron them. This of course was the essence of his humour. There was not much money floating around in those days and five pounds was an awful lot of money. He would do this to tease us and we talk about it to this day. He also had a beautiful voice. His speaking voice was a little high pitched and he was a great tenor. It was difficult to get him to sing. Then there were others who woudn't shut up. The knowledge of opera and opera singers and composers came out of that house with Granda Waddell , Dessie and Pat. Through all of them and especially Mam I was aware of Caruso, Jussi Bjoerling and Gigli long before Elvis.

This photo was taken in our house on Lally road. Dessie sang a few songs and it was brilliant. He had such a great voice and he could be heard on the footpath outside.
