This is Grannie Waddell at 61 Monasterboice Road. This photo was taken by Cecil, Mam, Pat and Fran were there. It was in taken on Easter Weekend in 1939.
Mam reckons this is Cecil beside her mam because he was there that day..as mam was and she says they were looking at the picture being taken. Peggy was only after getting married....all the children were there and it was Easter time...Wow!!
We think it is my father's blind brother desmond. He would possibly have taken him to see Nanna because he was helping to look after him. Does your Mom remember if Desmond was there. He just died last week by the way. We have more pics to come. Keeping checking the blog.
Yes Dor..my mam just saw it and rang me to say that it is Desmond Dowling...that Cecil took the photo. mam wanted me to clear that up straight away so here I am....she remembers the day very well...
Yes mam is delighted to see it. Me too........I never met Granny Waddell and always wished I could have and even seeing the one pic of her for the first time whenever that was, was a real treat...this pic is especially wonderful a it shows her in a natural relaxed way as opposed to the formal one I saw previously.
Just saw the photo and thought the same as you Eileen, this is great, as there are practically no photos of Granny Waddell that we have seen, only the one taken with Peggy and Mam. Definitely one to save, and looking forward to more...She died the same year I was born.....
Good thing I followed mom's instructions and put it on the blog! :) I love looking at old pictures. I finally had my friend frame the posed picture of Nana, Aunt Eileen etc. It is right above my computer.
I remember Granny Waddell. I don’t know how many other of the childer do on either side of the fambly. I must have been very young but I remember her very imposing presence looming over me. She had on a dark blue dress with small flowers on it and a brooch in her cardigan. It was in 61 on a cold day and a fire was burning behind her. It says a lot for her presence that this image should stay in my mind after all these years. I also remember Granny Barret very well. She used to talk to me from her chair in the corner behind the door. She was already very old but she made a big impression on me too. I can still see her today.
PS. I know that is not how you spell family. I like the sound of fambly and there is a history to the spelling, likewise for children.
Well as Anne says...Granny Waddell died the year she was born so so there were nine of us who never got to meet her including Anne of course. i only have a vague memory of Grandad Waddell and his walking stick saying ah ah to me...as I was at the bottom end of the fambly he would have died while I was quite young but I always wished I could have met Granny.
As soon as I looked at the negative I recognised the thread spools in the fence as the same as the one of Dessie Chrissie Pat and Fran couldnt wait to get it printed. Uncle Desmond was about 17 and both his parents were dead so my dad must have been taking care of him. I dont remember Nana she died soon after I was born
Well done Heather. This is the first picture I have ever seen of my Granny Waddell.I only ever visualised her from what the Ma told me about her. I would love to see some more if you have any.

I only ever saw one photo of my grandmother my mams mam and she resembles her...brings her to my mind immediately but I am not sure.
I have just described pic to my mam on phone and she says it is granny Waddell........I knew it!! Great to see this!

Thank you for clearing that up. We are delighted to have finally realized that a negative that has been around since we were children is of Nanna.

We are also very sorry to hear Desmond has died...I have just told mam....she is sad to hear that.

Are there any more photos like this? We would love to see them.
