think we all have copies of this. That was my mothers first communion dress, she also wore it for her confirmation a year later.

Who posted this, Mammy or sister Eileen??

I would love to get a high-res scan of it to duplicate.

Dor said...

Therese looks so much like Nanna.

Eileen said...

Sister Eileen posted this..as in sibling rather than her reverence!!!!

This is a photo that originally came from Dor. I fixed it up for her and there is now a big scan of it of about 20 mb. I think. We have the before and after. Maybe I will post the before although I think it has already been posted. It is in great condition.

I love old photos, especially if the photo is of people that I love. (Eileen, that would be you) Is it possible to get a copy?

Colin M. Walsh said...

thanks for posting this larger picture, it is great to see. And looking at it, for the first time I can really see what people mean when they say i look like Grandad. Amazing!

He was a handsome devil..........

Colin M. Walsh said...

And my beautiful Mam... she had that twinkle in her eye even back then.

Therese said...

Nana was about 29 or 30 in this and grandad was about 45.

phyllis said...

Goodness only 29/30 years old and she and grandad had already gone through the pain of loosing their two sons, how sad it must have been for them both......you can only imagine how it must have been for both of them.
Mam still looks the same and Fran looks like her mother, Peggy is very pretty, all you girls look like her in one way or another,i think Dor mostly, Grandad James looks so handsome you would not think he was 45/46 years old,(must be where we get the good skin) and yes Colin he was a handsome devil just like you, and our Brian,i agree Therese you do look like Granny Waddell.

we (the dowling girls ) as we have been kindly called on the blog, gave Queen Eileen an enlarged framed copy of this photo for her 80th birthday. if it has been relegated to the back of a cupboard would somebody have a search for it. Thought you would have all been very familiar with it.

Colin M. Walsh said...

I have seen this before, in fact it was the very first time in my memory that I saw a photo of my Grandmother. She had passed long before I was born, and Grandad was a very old man as I remember him. I thought it was delightful to see this, and give youth to my grandparents, and also to see My mam and Peggy as a young children. This photo remains the only photo I have ever seen of my Grandmother.

For me it's the only picture of her that's been around. I know there was a picture of her hanging on the wall in Monsterboice Rd. when I was a child, because after her funeral I remember my mother looking at it. I remember her vaguely, but if we didn't have that picture of her it would be very difficult to imagine how she looked. With it and the vague memory of her, she remains a real person to me. Since Evelyn has been doing her family research, I would really like to know what some of the earlier generation people looked like, e.g. Nanna's mother, Margaret Henderson-Brady. She actually had a very tragic life. Married as a minor, lost her husband very shortly thereafter, married our great grandfather who died at age 36 and left her to raise the 5 children by herself. That must have been very difficult in those days when there was no (or very little) child support, etc.

Rita, Yes, Queen Eileen has that picture hanging in her bedroom, its hanging there for safety reasons in case someone removes it (and has a permanent lapse of memory)because i know every one would love to have it.
Queen Eileen loves the photo and treasures it.
can you blame her it's the only one she has of her mother and father when they were young.

phyllis said...

I can tell you what Queen Eileen told me about great uncle Jack (granny Waddell's brother).our great uncle
he was somewhat younger then granny with the brightest blue sparkling eyes, even when he wasn't smiling his eyes sparkled, he was tall with dark hair and full of fun he'd tease granny and called her (roundy) he lived with granny and the family on Monsterboice road for a while, he often brought home stray cats and have them at the end of the bed, granny would go mad at this, he was a soldier and drove the Armoured car in the Easter parades,
He married a Irish girl called Nan Curtis who had German relatives.

Therese said...

Myself and Evelyn saw the entry for Jack's birth last week in Dublin he was born on 24/04/1904,

Queen Eileen was telling me last night that great aunt Molly (Granda Waddells sister) was beautiful when she was young, she was a model, there is also a painting of her.

Therese said...

Molly was married at 19, that seemed to be normal in those days, the girls were mostly minors and the men 30 or over. Rosie and Annie spent some time in Goldenbridge orphanage, dont know how long though.

phyllis said...

must ask queen Eileen and see if she can enlighten us a little further.
would be great if she has more information on Molly.

Eileen said...

All very very interesting.....like Colin this is the only pic I have ever seen of my maternal grandmother whom I also never met...a lot of us didn't get to. I used to be fascinated with who she was before I saw this pic. I used to wish I could go back in time for a day to meet her.....also seeing mam as a baby. it's all hard to imagine.

Colin M. Walsh said...

This is all fascinating stuff... There must be more pictures somewhere. these two generation have spanned a century, and a quarter, from Grandas birthday in 1881 to now, some 128 years later.... that is a great deal of time between grandparents and grand children. I think our Lynda is the youngest of the generation, please correct me if I am in error here.

phyllis said...

I think aunt Pat or aunt Fran might have younger kids then mam, maybe Frans Stephen could be the youngest of that generation Colin.
I could be wrong.

Dor said...

There are bound to be some old pictures at Monsterboice Rd. Does anybody have the right relationship with Florrie to get permission to go there and have a look.

Colin M. Walsh said...

I remember visiting chrissy and Desi with Mam on a trip home years ago, and there were tons of photos.. this was before the days of laptops and scanners, so I took some photos of the photos..

most of them have already been already distributed.

Eileen said...

Mam amd Phil could hook up with Florrie re photos I'm sure.....they have been in contact since Chrissie died and they get on well so it's a possibility!

Dor said...

Phyllis, Eileen has volunteered your services. Do you think you could go on a photo rescuing mission?

Unknown said...

Phyllis, get dem foros!

I remember Granny Waddell but very vaguely. She was a big woman who dressed in the fashion of the day of the 50’s. She was wearing a dark blue dress with little burgundy and green flowers and she had a broche pinned to the opening where the collars met when I saw her. I was up in 61 and she was there. I can still see her bending down looking at something she had in her hand while I stood by her. She was a big presence in the room and she had a forceful personality. This is my recollection although I was too young to know what a forceful personality was. I still remember and feel her presence

Therese said...

Well for you Jim she is not in my memory at all, I was about a year when she died, I would love to see other photos of her, I remember grandad well. Sinead Murphy was born about 1974 , she would be the youngest grandchild.

phyllis said...

I would love to say i remember granny Waddell, Queen Eileen always tell me I'm very like her in my ways.
I was only two and a half when she died and Ann was six months old, Mam had just moved to Crumlin, granny never told anyone she was sick until it was too late.
I remember Granda Waddell so well, banging on the cilling with the sweeping brush getting them out of bed, the smell of the tea stewing on the cooker, i can almost smell it now.his little purse he had in his pocket, the cardigan he would not take off him with the holes at the elbows. he would come to see mam every week, and stay for while, poke the dog with his stick and ask mam has she not enough mouths to fed without a dog as well. Florrie and i were best friends so i spent a lot of time there.
I will see if Florrie has any more photos and if she has i will try and get them scanned. i haven't seen Florrie in a while, and when i do see her again she will call me her fair weather friend.

Dor said...

That would be great Phyllis. You can make a big fuss of her and she'll forgive you for being a fair weather friend. Encourage her to dig down deep in the drawers to look for photos that might be lying there for 40 years or more - maybe even 60-80. Assure her that she'll get them back and copies of them once they've been scanned. I know Chrissie was a great housekeeper, but I don't imagine she'll have thrown out photos.

Dor said...

I have a cameo broach (nothing fancy, porcelain and copper) that was Nanna's. Maybe that's the broach that you remember Jim.

Colin M. Walsh said...

Phyllis, While you are talking to Florrie, please encourage her to take part in the blog. It would be great to hear from her. And, I think she would enjoy the contact with the rest of us. Her boy, I cant remember his name has a few bob dosent he??? maybe he can sort her out with a computer and connection..

Dor said...

I agree Colin. It would be great if Florrie and Pat and Fran and their offsprings would participate.

Eileen said...

Absolutely...the more the merrier.....well Jim you were lucky to have known granny Waddell and to remember her so well. All the grandchildren she never saw. All fascinating really. I am sure Florrie would be happy to oblige re Photos.

Heather said...

Sinead Murphy was born the same year I was - 1974. She is a few months older than me....

Heather said...

All I can say, I love hearing all the stories and I'm very glad to have that photo of them here in Florida.

phyllis said...

I know for a fact Florrie is no way into computers she won't even look at photos on it.

Unknown said...

All the more reason to see if there any so we can scan them.

Evelyn said...

I remember Nana quite well. Don't forget that I am her first grandchild, and the first great-grandchild of her parents. She was what I would call a "Proper Granny" (not like me). She always gave me a hug and made a bit of a fuss of me. One time when I noticed that she was wearing a very raggy cardigan I said to her "Nana, when I grow up I'll knit you a new cardigan" She seemed to be very pleased about that and I fully intended to knit that cardigan, but unfortunately she was gone before I got the chance.

therese and I are visiting Dor here in Germany at present and were looking at nana' brooch today, I remember it well when she wore it. Its really nice and would love to know if anybody else has anything that belonged to either nana or granna. I have granna' walking stick which I treasure.. I tried several times to get Pat onto the blog but she depends on Miriam or Sinead and they are not always around.

Rita forgot to mention that she has a little statue of an angel guarding a baby that Granna gave her for her confirmation. Doing this on Dor's computer so this is coming up as one of Miss Rita's comments, but it is Therese here.

phyllis said...

I was showing Mam the brooch that belonged to Granny on the blog, she said she can't remember her ever wearing it.
We don't have anything that belonged to Granny or Grandad Waddell,.
when granny died mam asked for grannies sewing machine that was lying doing nothing in the back bedroom, as she was the only one who could use it, but they declined, she never knew what ever happened to the machine.
All mam has is the copy of the family photo taken in London and her memories of course.
Enjoy your holiday, hope you get a taste of summer time there, and if you do let us all know what it's like!!!

Dor said...

We are trying to cope with the transition to nice weather. Shopped a lot today, ate a lot and plan to sun a lot tomorrow.

Enjoy the great weather......
it's raining here as usual.

phyllis said...

OH, so that's what you do when the sun shines I must keep a note of that one.

Heather said...

I spoke to Anne today . Not sure if I'm going to be able to see her.
There is a bank holiday May 25th - maybe I can arrange to meet her. I forgot about that while she was on the phone with me.

I really think that there should be an all out effort to recover any photos of grandparents, aunts uncles and any other relations for posterity. With all that is being done on the genealogy side I think it would be a great addition to the family history. I will scan fix and put a montage together if anyone can get all the photos from everyone.
