Father James

This is a somewhat good restoration of this picture. I will do it again when I get better. I think I got this photo from Dor.

Father James used to visit us every Tuesday night in 161. He was a great connisseur of music and could identify and name the composer of a symphony from the first few bars. I was getting interested in classical music at the time and I had Schuberts Unfinished on the little record player that we had. The minute he walked in the door he told me what I was listening to.

I wanted to do that.

He was also a very good photographer and he must have had a good camera because all the photos he took of us have stood the test of time.

I think that Schubert LP is still in the house.

Very fond memories of Fr James he came to our house on Saturdays to watch the wrestling and out for a drive on Sundays. Does anyone know where his nephew Joe Aherne is I've
looked on Facebook. He is about 58.

The last i heard of him he was a manager in Dunnes store in Tallaght but he moved on. I also looked for him on Facebook but no joy.

I also have very fond memories of him. He used to visit me when I was at a stage of my life I prefer to forget about...convent life. Have lots of photos of him from them but unfortunately they also include me in a habit and these have been buried deep.

If you want to publish or have those photos but don't want to include yourself Rita, I can edit them for you. He made an impression on a lot of people and there are fond memories of him.

I am using this blog again as perhaps some of you living in Dublin could come to the rescue here. after my mam died I suddenly realised I had not informed Rosie Kinsley of her death, and as she had not been at her funeral I was wracked with Guilt and phoned her. My mam and she had been in regular contact when we lived in Dublin. Poor Rosie did not know who I was let alone who mam was. I realised she was not with it and made no further effort to contact her. At that stage she was still living in Mercer House. I wonder if she is still alive. If Joe Aherne could be traced we might find out. Its an unfinished era. Phyllis can you do anything?

Are the Salesians still in Crumlin, perhaps they would have some address in their files for Joe. They might have been in
contact with him when James was ill

I think Father James managed to stay in contact with a lot of people. He was always very easy to talk to.That's a shame about Rosie, she was also a very nice person. I hope she has/had someone to care for her if she has/had the big A.

I think that was for your 18th birthday Phylis,I remember it well because you had a party, and I remember the song "Build me up Buttercup" bring played on it. To this day every time I hear that song it reminds me of that party. As for Fr James, I remember he used to flick his hankie, or a dishcloth at us kids, and did we have to walk him home later in the evening? I am open to correction here..
