Greenhills....sure that's where Lynda and Phyllis live......u didn't need the hiking gear ha ha ha!!! I have to say again...Stuart Lynch bears a strong resemblence to you..(Lynda's son)
That is the point of the photos. I was talking to Mam about that the other day. The greenhills in those days was the wilderness and we used to go hiking up there. We would bring a primus stove and make tea ( notice the mug on the rucksack) and have sandwiches. It was an adventure and now people live up there. I knew I had a couple of photos of one of the hikes so here they are. I think I was with Gerry Twyford or someone like that but I can only find the photos of me. Does anyone else remember the hikes or was it just me.
We used to go picking blackberries up there...just up past what used to be the quarry..this was just past where the Submarine Bar is now. Only about a mile away, but it was virtually the countryside...many happy days playing in the jungle...ah yes..I remember it well...
It must also be said that this was the period of much gazing in mirrors and combing of hair and above all striking the right pose at the appropriate moment. Still the same.
Yes i remember this well, little did i know when i went up to Greenhill with the girl guides and picking blackberrys that i would be living there one day, plus if you ventured up as far as the cuckoo nest you were really deep in the countyside and lost!! i remember you going on your hike with Gerry Twyford and us standing at the door waving you off and telling you both to be careful, plus it took ma a week to get the muck off the boots before mrs Twyford could bring them to the "pawn" you were told to keep them clean..........
Ah yes, I remember it well. The 'secret passage' was just around the bend there. Many's the ware to be found. Do you know that hike was only up the road a bit.
I spent a lot of my youth hiking through the country and wicklow in particular. Although by the time I set off on my treks greenhills was already there, along with sprawl all the way up to the foot of the hills. I have great memories of my time hiking camping and hosteling through Ireland and I met some fantastic people. I had camp and bivouac sites throughout the mountains in newtownmountkenedy, roundwood, glencree, by the glencree river and so on. I also spent a a great deal of time during the winter in the Glencree reconciliation center where we would meet people from the north and get to know each other, it was great fun. however unibomber-esque is may seem now.
I think that puts my blackberry picking in the shade....some of those words Colin...what do they mean???? ha ha.... Im letting on to understand them, really........
