For those childer: this was the meeting place of courting couples in the sixties and before. Many a marraige was made and many a heart was broken at the foot of the pillar. I remember having a date here when I was about sixteen or so. Another rendevous spot was at the ESB offices on what I think was Bachelors Walk. I went on a blind date there one evening with just a photo to recognize my intended. All the girls wore headscarves and wool coats bought in Clerys. All the boys wored drainpipe trousers with pointy shoes. Ah, the innocence. Where has it gone ?

They later put the 'Spike' in O'Connell Street to replace Nelsons Pillar. This necessitated in them using very large cranes to help with the installation. They were so big you couldn't see the other side of the street. Anyway, when they had finished the job and moved off one man was overheard saying, and this true....'I can see Cleary's now the crane has gone'. Only in Dublin.

I have no recollection of Nelsons Pillar. Mam tells me that I was up inside it shortly before it blew up. I do remember losing my chemistry set around the same time.
